Sun Beams Effect

March 20th, 2007

sunbeamprevI haven’t done a screencast in ages! (Yet alone a photoshop one). But the other day I got an email from Pang who asked whether I could make a screencast to demonstrate how to recreate the sun beams effect that I used in an old wallpaper. I was all too happy to oblige so here’s the screencast, it’s in .h264 so you’ll need QT7 or VLC to view it.

Excellent. I've been told several ways of achieving this, but i always seem to forget.

Thanks a lot for the tutorial. But I can't manage it. The beam just moves clockwise with a degree when I preform "Transform again". The beam can't be duplicated.

It sounds like your missing a key off the shortcut, just for you to check

For the mac the shortcut is:

command+alt+shift+T

For windows it's:

ctrl+alt+shift+T

Let me know if you still have any problems!

You're right. I really missed a key off the shortcut before. I can now have my sunbeams. Thanks a lot for your help. I will watch out on your site for more tutorials. Thanks a lot! :D And do you mind telling me how you recorded the tutorials and save it as .mov. I'm a Mac user as well. :)

Yeah sure :) My workflow is a bit lengthy because I like to use h264 to keep the files small, but unfortunately there's a bug with Snapz Pro X (the app I record with) that breaks the movie.

Thus, it goes something like this:

1. Capture the movie in SnapzPro X 2. Export at full quality using Apple Animation Codec 3. Open in Quicktime Pro, then export again using h264.

As an alternative to Snapz Pro X which is a tad pricey, you could use the much cheaper iShowU but if you want to record in h264 you'll need quite a beefy mac (or an intel one at any rate).

And if you don't want to get Quicktime Pro then you can use either VisualHub or an open source solution to convert the video.

There seems to be a problem with your download.php. I was able to get the link but I had to bypass download.php.

Peace!

Thanks for letting me know about that, it was a problem with one of the mint peppers I'm using. Everything should be fine now :)
