Slicehost

June 05, 2007

As the title suggests, this site is now being served off my lovely new ‘slice’ from Slicehost which I bought a week or two ago, but which only just became habitable (setting up mail servers is such a pain).

I’m on a 256mb slice and despite it being a step down from my old system at PowerVPS it’s really remarkably nippy and thus far it looks a great package for anyone wanting to get their hands dirty with running their own webserver, someone who’s maybe outgrown shared hosting or anything like that.

What I LOVE though, is that I’ve finally axed cPanel. Don’t get me wrong it’s very good and is a must for most hosts but boy does it bog the server down. Not only that but you only get updates when they say so, in the end I was frequently compiling PHP myself to get security updates and it all made for a very dissatisfying experience.

Of course, the downside to that was that I had to get my entire server set up myself and despite being experienced doing it, mail servers are something I’ve never managed to get my head around. So a big thanks to Alistair (who’s also moved to slicehost) who found this lovely postfix+dovecot tutorial that set me on the right track!
