Powerless
October 20, 2006
I’ve not had a power cut in absolutely ages and then suddenly last night I was struck by several outages. The first was the longest lasting around 40 minutes and during that (admittedly brief) time, sat in the dark with a bike light (didn’t have any candles), it struck me just how much we take for granted having power available every time we flick on a switch.
The fridge, TV, internet, computer (besides my iBook) all off limits… Good job one of my pass-times is reading a good Stephen King book by “bike light”…
What has bugged me most about this though is that around 2am in the morning there were apparently more outages, but very brief lasting a matter of seconds. The trouble with this being that, my computer resumes it’s previous state in the event of power loss, meaning in effect it’s power was cut 2 or 3 times. This resulted in corrupt data on my storage drive, around 100Gb of it to be precise. Luckily most of the important stuff was backed up on another drive which I keep safe, but in total I’ve still lost around 40Gb of data.
It’s annoying, and it’s further reinforced my desire to get a UPS so I’m not caught out in such situations in the future!
