Opera Unite

June 17, 2009

Something new and exciting was rolled out of the Opera Labs yesterday dubbed Opera Unite. The aim is to essentially turn any computer that is running opera, into a fully fledged server of sorts.

As an example, after installing the beta browser, I was able to click a few buttons and in seconds I was sharing a folder over the internet. Once I sent my friends the appropriate url they could visit a special webpage with a simple interface and download any file they wanted from that folder on my computer.

Similarly, there are special “services” available that are specialised toward sharing pictures or video and there’s even a webserver service. The beauty of it is that only you actually need to be using opera, once you have a service configured any other browser can access the content you’re sharing quickly and easily.

The best part however, is the API. I’ve not had chance to look at it properly yet, but no doubt there could be some incredible things made with a service like this. It’ll be interesting to see how this evolves as more people start to use it.
