Kuler

When a design is in it’s infancy I often find myself struggling to come up with good colour schemes, especially on those bad days when inspiration is hard to come by.
I recently picked up a program called Colour Schemer which is a pretty cool app with several nifty features but there are times when it feels slightly clunky, and the auto-generation of colour schemes (on those really bad days) is quite poor.
Enter a new web application from the Adobe Labs, going by the name of Kuler.
It’s about Colour and Community
Kuler basically allows you to easily create a colour scheme and then (if you wish) share it with everyone else on the web. Colour schemes which are published are tagged and then other users on the web can comment as well as rate your colour scheme using an iTunes-esque starring system.

The community aspect in no way detracts from the actual creation of colour schemes, all the usual “rules” are there, Triad, Complementary, Monochromatic etc etc. You can also choose to forget the rules and make a custom colour scheme as well which I often find myself doing. The interface is quite nicely done, I thought it was overly dark at first but now it’s grown on me a bit I really quite like it and it provides a nice contrast when you’re busy creating colours.
All in all a really nice release from the Adobe Labs I must say… check out Kuler here.
