John Mayer
January 28, 2007
Though I’m loath to make yet another mention of Macworld I just had to. However it’s not to talk about any of the new products, Steve Jobs clothes (seriously, some people are odd) or anything like that. It’s actually a ‘discovery’ I made right at the end of the keynote.
Normally I switch off but I left it running the other night and when I came back to it there was a live performance from John Mayer singing Gravity. I hadn’t heard the song before, or even of John Mayer, but I was instantly captivated and less than 10 minutes later I had a copy of Continuum (courtesy of iTunes).
Without doubt it’s one of the best albums I’ve listened too, covering a broad range of topics with exceptional lyrics and at times quite beautiful blues, soft funk and soul instrumentals. It’s very “stripped to basics” which is an approach I love, especially when both TV and Radio seem to concern themselves with bass driven, tuneless dance music or over produced pop songs sung by someone off x-factor. The light melodic approach of this album is refreshing and makes for easy listening, great for relaxing too or just having on in the background whilst working.
Since Continuum, I’ve picked up both Heavier Things and Room for Squares, two albums released previously and I’ve been in music heaven ever since! Regardless of musical taste I recommend anyone to give these a listen as between them, the albums are a showcase of exceptional music talent.
