iTunes Movie Rentals?

July 31, 2006

itunesThere has been a lot of rumours flying around lately, regarding Apple possibly allowing movie rentals through their iTunes service. The idea being that you could pick the movie you want, watch it for so many days after purchase and then have it not work anymore after that.

Interestingly people seem quite unhappy about this and their main argument seems to be that they feel if they part with their money they should be able to keep the file afterwards and have it remain fully functional…

This majority seems to have forgotten the premise of “renting” a movie. You remember years ago, when you would traipse down to the video store, hand them your membership card and a little money and head home to watch your film? Did you not then take the film back afterward? So why no complaints then?

In a way it’s sort of amusing that people have rejected the thought of iTunes movie rentals so much, not because it’s necessarily a bad idea, but because they would rather be able to buy the film for keeps (which is considerably different than a movie renting service).

Personally, being able to buy a movie through iTunes would be fantastic and is something I hope to see in the future. But equally, having movie rentals through such a simple and convenient service is also quite attractive and isn’t something I would reject.
