Finally... Autumn
October 13, 2006

It’s been Autumn for a couple of weeks now if your an Astronomer or even a month or two if you go strictly by the Celtic calendar. But much like my methodology for deciding when to eat and sleep, it’s not Autumn until it feels like Autumn, I don’t care what the Celts or astronomers say.
I make a big deal out of Autumn, maybe it’s because my birthday is in October (my 21st this year) but no, there’s something else. Something… perfect, I mean think about it…
Winter is freezing, there’s no colour around, nature is just a blank slate waiting to be painted on come spring.
Spring is colourful, we have the whole “lease of new life” thing and with it being England it brings with it a whole monsoon of rain that never seems to end.
Then we have Summer, the season I hate the most. Long days, sleepless nights, way too hot to enjoy the dry spells and just a genuinely uncomfortable period of the year. (Yes, I’m weird.)
But Autumn… bursting with rich oranges and reds, the tree’s like firework displays, it’s a masterpiece! You wake up to crisp mornings, biking along the promenade there’s a definite bite in the air, but it’s not quite cold.
You get to shuffle through all the dry fallen leaves that cover your feet to just above the ankles. The days get shorter, dusk comes quickly, the brief sunsets making silhouettes of the nearly bare trees, dark against the orange sky.
Then you have bonfire night. Sadly this isn’t as spectacular as it used to be. There used to be a large bonfire on the beach every year, great displays, people huddled together, armed with hats, gloves and of course, a hot dog from one of the innumerable stands parked along the length of the prom. It’s a shame they stopped doing that…
I hope Winter doesn’t “muscle in” too quickly as it so often seems to in this country…
