Connoisseur
November 28, 2006
I love baking, it’s no secret, especially in the colder months of the year. Christmas cakes, plumb breads, tea bread, oat crunchies, I love making them all. What I don’t love however is rummaging through a myriad of cookery books, or searching for a obscure scrap of paper, to find the recipe I want.
Enter Connoisseur, a great little app that Nick discovered yesterday…
Connoisseur is pretty much any chefs dream. You can store all of your recipes in one place, search through them in a flash, rate them and a whole lot more. You can see how the main interface looks just over to the right.
Entering recipes is a cinch, and as you type in units for your ingredients Connoisseur will predict what your entering and not only that, it will (optionally) convert the unit to metric or imperial.
Once entered you have the option of sharing your recipes by submitting them to a database where you can browse other submitted recipes and import them into your database.
There’s a “cooking view” (pictured right) which is an excellent feature. It fills your entire computer screen and has all of the ingredients on the left hand side and then lists each step of the method on the right. Everything is bold and bright so you can easily set-up your laptop out of the way in the kitchen and glance at it quickly. Sure beats covering your favourite cookery book with flour or spilling liquids on it (sadly I speak from experience).
I’ve yet to try this feature out but you can also drag and drop recipes onto a shopping list which, in turn, can be copied onto your iPod to take out shopping with you. Nifty little feature that and one I’ll be making use of quite a bit.
If you enjoy cooking/baking and you happen to have £11.95 to spare, Connoisseur is simply a must buy.
