10.4.7 Update

June 28, 2006

Well I don’t normally feel the urge to write after a new point release of Tiger (10.4.7) but I’m always one to make exceptions.

isyncFirstly there’s iSync, finally with proper support for the Nokia 6230. Although I no longer own the phone, my Mum does and this is something she’s missed out on for quite some time. Something I wasn’t expecting though was calendar support as some friends of mine have often had calendar problems with their Nokia’s but this has worked without a hiccup thus far!

isyncThen there’s Mail. I don’t know what Apple have done but my smart mailboxes are all noticeably quicker and whereas multiple queries to the same smart mailbox used to have to be re-scanned each time (admittedly it only took a second to do but it used to bug me anyway) it now seems there’s some caching in place. There probably isn’t but it sure feels that way.

isyncSafari, didn’t really see as much of an update as I hoped. I really thought we might actually start to see some of the great features from webkit nightlies start to find their way into the official Safari but sadly not. However, the performance of Safari has increased quite noticeably and caching seems to be slightly improved which was a big niggle for me. Maybe, just maybe it will return as my default browser.

isyncAperture, in the past week or two with the 1.1.2 update and now 10.4.7 it has sped up by 32% according to some quick benchmarks I did. I’m certainly going to have to look at getting my own copy instead of borrowing my friends as it now actually makes Lightroom feel sluggish at times which is something that never used to happen!

So thumbs up from me Apple, a solid update. Goes to check on Windows update for fixes on numerous zero day exploits…
